Sunrise Advocacy was founded by Craig Yaris, who was introduced to the complexities of the healthcare system in 1988 when his father suffered a massive heart attack and nearly died. This event marked the beginning of a long series of treatments and procedures that eventually led to his father having a heart and kidney transplant in 2009. At the beginning of his father’s health crisis, Craig was a college student, studying Sociology and Public Justice, who went on to study Law in Boston. After Craig graduated from the New England School of Law, he became an Assistant District Attorney in Queens, New York. Little did Craig know that this training and experience would be put to use as he helped his family work to understand the complexities of the healthcare system. Because his father’s journey involved many hospital stays over a period of nineteen years, Craig frequently found himself in the position of having to communicate with doctors’ offices, hospitals, and insurance companies to understand the complicated mound of paperwork his family received as well as oftentimes having to work to resolve billing and coverage disputes.
These experiences helped Craig to understand the stress that navigating the healthcare system can cause, causing him to wonder about families who lack the skill, experience, and/or expertise needed to find their way through this complicated maze. His commitment to making this complex system more accessible to others as well as his genuine compassion for others, especially those enduring the hardship caused by illness, inspired him to become a patient advocate.
Craig’s commitment to helping families during difficult times is the backbone of Sunrise Advocacy’s mission. It is our goal to reduce your stress and bring peace of mind knowing that there’s someone willing to fight your battles with the complicated healthcare system so that can focus on what really matters: healing.
